Baritone Gurgen Baveyan is swiftly establishing himself as a specialist in Italian bel canto repertoire making an impressive series of debuts in major European houses to great acclaim.
Nominated as the ‘most sought after singer’ of the year by the OpernWelt magazine in 2018, his engagements include the roles of Marcello (La Bohème) at Nederlandse Reisopera, Figaro Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Verdi Trieste, Theater Basel, Gran Teatro Nacional of Lima, Teatro delle Muse Ancona and Teatro Verdi Sassari, Don Alvaro (Il Viaggio a Reims) at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro, and in the golden hall of Musikverein as part of Juan Diego Florez & Friends Rossini Gala concert, Dandini (La Cenerentola) for the New Generation Festival at the Boboli Gardens Florence, Schaunard (La Bohème) at Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Michelotto Cibo (Die Gezeichneten) at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and a guest performance at the Festival of White Nights with the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg.
Recently, he has sung concerts with Maestro Riccardo Muti at the Ravenna Festival and Maggio Musicale Florence with repertoire including Schubert’s Messe and Tigran Mansourian Purgatorio, a series of debuts as Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Opéra National de Lorraine, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Teatro Verdi in Pisa, Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi, Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Staatstheater Hannover, Papageno (The Magic Flute) at Teatro Regio Torino, Faust/ Doctor Marianus in Scenes from Goethe’s Faust at Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, Mario in the world premiere of Opera Italiana at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, Schaunard (La Bohème) at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Harlequin (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Teatro Verdi Triestre.
His projects for the 2024/25 season : Harlekin in Budapest and Vicenza with the Budapest Festival Orchestra (cond. Iván Fischer), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) in Cagliari, Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) in Nice and with the Orchestra Haydn in Trento, Haly (L’italiana in Algeri) at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
Gurgen was a member of the Accademia Rossiniana at ROF Pesaro. He studied voice at the Armenian State Conservatory and Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, under the tutelage of Hedwig Fassbender.
In his early career, he was a member of the ensemble at the Armenian National Theatre, a guest artist at the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and at Yerevan Opera Studio, a member at the Opera Studio and later on a guest artist at Oper Frankfurt, where he performed a variety of roles.
Awards include the 2nd prize at the Pavel Lisitsian Competition in Moscow, 2013 and the Young Singer of the Year Award 2010 from the President of the Republic of Armenia.
